Papadimoulis asks Mogherini to protect Cyprus’ sovereign rights in offshore drilling

SYRIZA MEP Dimitris Papadimoulis asked EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini on Friday to explain how the EU will protect Cyprus’ sovereign rights and the continuation of its natural gas exploration program, in a question posed to the European Commission.

Papadimoulis mentioned the intervention of a Turkish warship in Cyprus’ exclusive economic zone (EEZ) which prevented a drillship of Italy’s ENI from reaching the area where it wants to explore for a second time in two weeks.

“In this way, the Turkish government is blocking the continuation of the energy program and exploratory drilling taking place in Cyprus’ territorial waters, violating its sovereign rights and international law,” he said and asked what initiatives Mogherini will take to clarify to Turkey that its activities “do not contribute to peace, stability and cooperation in the Aegean and the southeastern Mediterranean.”
