Parliament ratifies defence cooperation agreement with Jordan, other amendments

An agreement for military cooperation between the defence ministries of Greece and Jordan and a Memorandum of Understanding for financing the planning and construction of new facilities for the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) International School were ratified by the Hellenic Parliament on Wednesday

The ratifications were backed by all the parties in Parliament except the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) and far-right Golden Dawn.

Parliament also accepted an amendment that put the defence ministry’s internal affairs department in charge of investigations into offences involving corruption or financial wrongdoing harmful to the interests of the ministry or the bodies supervised by the ministry and the armed forces.

The amendment was backed by the ruling coalition parties SYRIZA and Independent Greeks (ANEL), as well as the Centrists’ Union, while main opposition New Democracy, the Democratic Alliance and Potami parties voted against. KKE and Golden Dawn abstained.

Parliament also passed two more amendments with the votes of SYRIZA, ANEL and the Centrists’ dealing with the use of military funds to building military housing and matters relating to the selection of supervisors in the civil service.
