Parties responded to a call on Wednesday by National Defence Minister Panos Kammenos in Parliament to express unity and solidarity before Turkish provocations with statements of support for national interests as set down in international treaties.
SYRIZA deputy Nikos Xydakis called for all Greek citizens and the mass media to “stop regenerating Turkey’s propaganda war.”
Main opposition New Democracy deputy Nikos Dendias termed the Turkish Foreign ministry’s statement claiming sovereignty over the Imia islets “entirely unacceptable” and called for absolute national solidarity.
“Turkey’s dangerous rhetoric should not be met with hot-headed responses,” DIMAR and Democratic Coalition representative Thanassis Theocharopoulos cautioned, and said the government itself should exhibit a unified stance.
Communist Party of Greece MP Christos Katsotis noted that “Turkey has repeatedly questioned Greece’s sovereignty rights. Any questioning of international treaties means war,” while Golden Dawn MP Christos Pappas spoke of extremely unfavorable times in Greek national issues.
