Piraeus mayor to seek damages in court for oil spill disaster

Piraeus mayor Giannis Moralis announced the municipality will be seeking damages through court for the environmental disaster caused in the wider area from the oil spill that leaked from the “Agia Zoni II” tanker last week.

The lawsuit follows a separate legal action against “all those responsible” for the pollution which Piraeus has already lodged in local courts. Moralis made the announcement during a meeting of the municipal council which is underway.

Earlier, the regional unit of Piraeus said its environmental, veterinary and health directorates have issued directives to municipalities and carried out daily inspections to ensure the health of residents since the sinking occurred: It has urged Piraeus and Salamina to install signs banning swimming, told fishermen to stop fishing in the areas affected by the pollution and inspected beaches to spot polluted areas.
