The use of plastic bags has been reduced by 80-85 percent since the imposition of the environmental cost.
According to the Hellenic Recycling Agency, the economic benefit reaches 7.7 million euros. By the end of 2019, Greece will have to meet the European target for reducing the consumption of plastic bags up to 90 plastic bags per person compared to 300 to 400 plastic bags per person in 2017.
The aim is to use up to 40 bags per person per year by 2025.
On the occasion of the completion of one year since the aboltition of the free plastic bag, Alternate Minister of Environment and Energy Socratis Famellos said to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA): “There is a great reduction in the use of thin plastic bags.”
As of 1 January 2019, the cost of the plastic bag willl rise from 0.04 to 0.09 euros.
