Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras had a telephone conversation with U.S. Treasury Secretary Jack Lew on Tuesday evening during which he briefed him on developments in the ongoing negotiations.
According to government sources, the Greek side “expressed its intention to bridge the differences between the two sides.”
On his side, Lew noted the urgency of Greece making a serious move to reach a pragmatic compromise with its creditors and that a failure to do so would have immediate implications on the country and wide uncertainties for Europe and the world economy.
The U.S. official also noted he will remain in contact with the Greek prime minister and the other sides in Europe and the international organisations.
Earlier, White House spokesman Josh Earnest told journalists that all sides involved in the ongoing talks should be interested in rebuilding Greece on solid economic foundations in a way that doesn’t rattle financial markets.
