PM Tsipras: It is shameful to humiliate those who seek a right to self-determination

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on Tuesday called on main opposition New Democracy leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis to “take back” what he called insulting statements targeting the transgender community.

“I referred yesterday to ND and the reasons why its leader was forced to change his attitude in order to maintain cohesion within his party,” Tsipras said on Tuesday during a debate in parliament on legislation for gender identity changes.

“Greek society is watching and will judge these things,” he stressed, noting that Mitsotakis had promised to vote in favour of the bill in principle when meeting with the transgender community two months ago but had now changed his mind.

“It is shameful and I expect Mr Mitsotakis to take back this insulting statement about our fellow citizens claiming the right, which he himself does not deny,” Tsipras said.
