Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on Wednesday spoke on the telephone with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, the Greek prime minister’s press office said.
The prime minister congratulated Trump on his victory in the U.S. elections and underlined the close ties of friendship and cooperation between the Greek and American people.
During their discussion there was stress on Greece’s crucial role for peace and security in the surrounding region, especially at a time of increasing destabilisation, and a reference to the great efforts made by the Greek people to face the economic and refugee crises.
They also confirmed the importance of strengthening strategic cooperation between the two countries in a series of areas, following up the recent visit to Greece by U.S. President Barack Obama.
Lastly, they agreed to maintain regular communication over the coming period.
