PM Tsipras: “There can be no democracy wherever a citizen does not feel safe”

“Strengthening our sense of security in high-crime areas is a critical issue concerning social cohesion, equality and democracy in our country,” Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras underlined on Wednesday during the opening of the West Attica Security Police Division’s new building.

“There can be no democracy wherever a citizen does not feel safe,” he underlined.

“The Roma, who have been living in the region for decades, cannot become a scapegoat and identified with delinquency. This is a way of thinking that has fed many generations with the poison of hatred and racism and has led to national and social tragedies,” Tsipras said.

The prime minister also condemned hate speech against Roma by politicians and said the political responsibility for this lay both with the individuals and their parties.
