Police arrest Albanian on migrant-trafficking charges following high-speed pursui

Kavala security police on Monday announced the arrest of a 22-year-old Albanian man, who was taken into custody following a high-speed pursuit and after officers were forced to fire on him, injuring his hand and thigh. The suspect was charged with migrant-trafficking after 10 Pakistani nationals who entered Greece illegally were found in his car.

The chase ensued after the suspect failed to comply with a signal to pull over for a routine police check but instead accelerated to get away. Police immobilised him after his vehicle overturned at a junction outside Kavala but the 22-year-old again resisted arrest, attacking one of the officers in an attempt to disarm him.

A second officer fired warning shots in the air but, when the suspect continued his attack, opened fire and shot him, hitting him in the thigh and hand. The suspect, the officer he had attacked and the 10 Pakistanis in the car were taken to hospital for treatment of the injuries they sustained.
