Police: Greek who died in incident with Albanian police had a drug record

The Greek man who died in the Albanian village of Bularat after an incident with local police had a history in narcotics, the Greek Police said on Monday.

Thirty-five-year old Konstantinos Katsifas had been arrested in the northeastern suburb of Halandri in 2008 for possession of half a kilo of unprocessed cannabis, they said.

On Sunday, the Greek Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Katsifas had “allegedly opened fire with a Kalashnikov rifle against an Albanian police vehicle attempting to arrest him,” while on Monday, Government Spokesman Dimitris Tzanakopoulos told Open TV that Greek authorities are in contact with the Albanian authorities over the incident and that nobody should jump to conclusions.
