Potami: Top court ruling on religion teaching in schools is ‘jump backwards’

A ruling by the Council of State to declare changes in the teaching of religion in schools unconstitutional is a “jump backwards”, Potami said on Wednesday, referring to the top court’s judgment on the recent changes in books initiated by former education minister Nikos Filis.

“The Council of State’s decision on the teaching of religion is a jump backwards,” the party said. “Decisions of this nature are reminiscent of interpretations of the 1950s, according to which religious instruction must be catechetic. Some people want Greece to return to a more conservative past instead of making progress.”
