New small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) recorded an annual increase of 20.63 pct in 2017, according to the General Commercial Registry, while company closures dropped 66.14 percent.
The figures were presented in a meeting between President of the Hellenic Republic Prokopios Pavlopoulos and the new administration of the Athens Chamber of SMEs.
According to the Chamber’s announcement, the following sectors moved upwards: bakery/pastry, carpentry, printing, metal constructions, auto repair, silversmithing, plumbing/electrical installations, barbers/hairdressers, construction/remodeling of buildings, laundry-cleaning.
Conversely, the sectors of clothing, paper, light bulbs/light inscriptions and other electrical materials registered a downward trend.
Pavlopoulos once again pointed out the need to support SMEs as they remain the backbone of the Greek economy.
