President Prokopis Pavlopoulos meets heads of journalists’ unions

President of the Hellenic Republic Prokopios Pavlopoulos on Tuesday received the heads of the journalists’ unions that participated in the Mediterranean and Black Sea journalists’ dialogue.

Pavlopoulos congratulated them on drafting and signing the “Declaration of Athens” and noted that, at a critical time for democratic institutions in general, this constitutes an emblematic shield for protecting real journalism and real journalists, with international reach.

He also referred to the murder of the Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, underlining that “we must all state that the prepetrators are the enemies not only of journalism but of democracy and by extension of our culture”.

On her part the president of the Athens Union of Journalists Maria Antoniadou said that the Declaration of Athens for the protection of journalists working in conflict zones and in countries around the world where press freedoms suppressed, will be tabled at the UN Security Council within a few days.
