Public hospital staff to hold work stoppage on Thursday from 12:00 to 15:00

Staff at public hospitals will stage a work stoppage from 12:00 to 15:00 on March 29 (Thursday), over a new bill under consideration that will bring changes in psychiatric services in Greece.

The staff union POEDIN said it will also rally at 12:30 on the same day at the premises of the health Ministry, near Omonia Square, over “the government’s gradual plans to abolish psychiatric hospitals,” it said in a statement.

According to the union, the limitation of available beds for short- and medium-term psychiatric cases at each specialised hospital to fewer than 100 – from over 200 today – will severely impact services. It said that every year, 10,000 cases are admitted to psychiatric hospitals.
