Relatives of fire victims in Mati sue authorities

The relatives of eight victims of the July 23 fire in Mati on Tuesday filed a suit against the leadership of the Greek coast guard, fire brigade and the regional and municipal authorities in Rafina and Marathonas.

The suit is signed by 16 relatives of the victims and is filed against the former civil protection general secretary Ioannis Kapakis, Attica governor Rena Dourou, Marathonas mayor Ilias Psinakis, Rafina mayor Evangelos Bournous, and the officers responsible for Rafina and Marathonas in the fire brigade and coast guard.

They are accused of several counts of exposing others to danger, homicide through negligence, arson through negligence and setting fire to forests through negligence. The plaintiffs claim the victims were “completely abandoned” resulting in their death, while the disaster was caused through the failure to take appropriate precautionary and preventative measures to protect against it.
