Sailboat with 70 refugees/migrants on board spotted near Thira

A sailing boat carrying an estimated 70 refugees and migrants has been located sailing in waters 22 nautical miles south of Thira, following a coordinated coast guard operation, Greek authorities said on Thursday.

Some of the migrants and refugees have been transferred to a coast guard rescue vessel while the rest remain on board, escorted by coast guard officers. They will be led to Heraklion port.

The coast guard also announced the rescued of 92 refugees and migrants in two separate search-and-rescue operations in the 24 hours between 7:00 on Wednesday until 7:00 on Thursday, in the seas near Lesvos and Samos.
