Seamen of Corfu announce new strike, ferry services suspended

The seamen of Corfu announced on Wednesday they are extending their strike by 48 hours for Thursday and Friday, saying the shipping ministry has not committed to satisfying their demands.

“Following the four-day suspension of the strikes that gave time for negotiations on our demands, there is no clear and written commitment as requested by the Ministry of Shipping and the Ferry Association for our requests,” their union said in a press release.

The seamen are asking to include in the collective labour agreement a longer break between sailings (one hour instead of 35 minutes), a wage increase of 3 percent, a night shift benefit and additional staff in the engine room and canteens (during the summer).

The strike will start at 06:00 on Thursday.
