The five main principles for the Europe of the future were underlined during a meeting of the President of Republic Prokopios Pavlopoulos with the president of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats of the European Parliament Gianni Pittella.
On his part, Pittella said he is Greece’s strong supporter stressing the importance of the immediate conclusion of the second programme review and the restructuring of the Greek debt.
Pavlopoulos expressed his optimism over Europe’s future towards the direction of the federal governance and integration provided that everyone assumes its responsibilities by following the principles of peace, solidarity, democracy, social justice and sustainable growth that led to a strong and coherent Europe.
Referring to the results of the recent elections in the Netherlands and Austria, Pavlopoulos noted that the people said no to populism and to the anti-European way and expressed the certainty that the French people will give the same answer.
Pittella expressed his opposition to a multi-speed Europe and asked Pavlopoulos to support the Rome Treaty. “The Treaty of Rome should refer to the social justice and we should move all together and not individually to meet these goals,” he said.
Finally, Pittella expressed his concern over Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s authoritarian stance which, as he said, has pointed out while addressing the European Parliament.
