Serbian family treated in hospital after boat’s engine bursts in flames in Halkidiki

A mother, 37, and her daughter, 4, remain hospitalized with light injuries in Thessaloniki after an accident involving the speedboat they were riding on with other family members on Sunday, in Sithonia on the Halkidiki peninsula.

The family of Serb nationals, a couple and three daughters, were on a Serbian-flagged vessel when the engine burst into flames. Four of them jumped in the sea while the father managed to drive the burning vessel to the shore.

All family members were initially treated at the local health center of Agios Nikolaos in Sitho, and then transferred to the Papageorgiou Hospital in Thessaloniki preventatively by the EKAV ambulance services.

According to statements on Monday morning by Hospital General Manager Constantine Emmanouilidis, the family is out of danger. The 4-year-old has “very light burns on her thighs” but “has no internal injury, and she is in hospital for preventative reasons.” The mother, 37, had a toe fracture which was operated on. Another daughter, 7, has bruises and was released from hospital.

The fire on the burning vessel was extinguished by the Fire Brigade of Marmaras prefecture and the vessel was removed to a safe place. There appears to be no pollution in the sea from the incident, while Coast Guard experts are investigating the causes of the fire.
