Shipping minister asks Supreme Court to unblock procedures for oil spill clean-up operation

Shipping Minister Panagiotis Kouroumblis asked a Supreme Court prosecutor to intervene and unblock two procedures that relate to the ongoing clean-up operation to remove leaked oil caused by the sunken tanker “Agia Zoni II”.

According to information, judicial authorities are not allowing the tanker “Lassaia” which was sent to pump out the oil from the wreckage but was then seized by port authorities for fuel smuggling, to unload its cargo.

The minister also asked the prosecutor to facilitate the procedure to find another tanker to pump out the rest of the oil from “Agia Zoni II” which was interrupted on Tuesday noon as, according to information, the owner of the sunken tanker objects to the ships proposed and requests other companies to take over the job.
