Greece’s street and farmers’ markets will operate as normal on the February 27 Clean Monday holiday, while retail food shops and markets will keep special opening hours. Clean Monday is a bank holiday in Greece and marks the start of Orthodox Lent.
The shops in the Consumers’ Market and the Central Markets and Fisheries Organisation in Rendi will stay open from 8:00 on Sunday until 14:00 on Clean Monday. Similarly, the Varvakios food market in central Athens will stay open from 22:00 on Sunday until 13:00 on Clean Monday.
Bakeries will be open from the morning of Clean Monday to sell the special unleavened ‘lagana’ bread traditionally eaten by Orthodox Greeks on this day.
