State arrears towards private sector will be cleared by August, says minister

State arrears towards the private sector will be cleared by August, Alternate Finance Minister George Chouliarakis said on Monday, during a debate in parliament.

A report issued earlier in the day by the State Accounting Office showed that state arrears to the private sector eased to 2.443 billion euros in January from 2.537 billion in December 2017, while pending tax returns fell to 691.9 million euros from 765.3 million in the same periods, respectively.

Responding to a question posed by New Democracy MP Christos Staikouras, Chouliarakis said it is “perfectly feasible” to repay them by the end of the country’s adjustment program, both by utilizing cash reserves, as well as by the European Stability Mechanism program.
