State Department urges Greece-Turkey to deescalate tension in the Aegean

The U.S. State Department encouraged Greece and Turkey on Tuesday to “deescalate” the tensions in the Aegean, after a Turkish coast guard vessel rammed a Greek patrol boat on Monday night near the Imia islets.

“Turkey and Greece have long-established diplomatic channels for addressing Aegean issues. We encourage all parties to take steps that will deescalate current situation. As a matter of principle, the US supports the sovereignty of countries in region including Greece and Turkey,” a spokesperson said, according to a news report on state broadcaster ERT.
