Status of protected witnesses is determined by prosecuting authorities, says Kontonis

The status of protected witnesses is determined by the judicial system and the government doesn’t know who they are, Justice Minister Stavros Kontonis said on Wednesday, speaking at ANT1 TV station’s main newscast on the Novartis case.

The minister said politicians should wait for investigating authorities to complete the procedure and refrain from speaking of a fit-up, as the opposition has claimed. He said any talk about the identity of protected witnesses is pure speculation, noting that the investigation is in its initial phase.

Asked about government spokesman Dimitris Tzanakopoulos’ visit to the Supreme Court, he said he didn’t go there to be informed about the case but simply asked if the procedure had been completed.
