Strike action by doctors and staff in state hospitals on Thursday

Healthcare staff unions have announced strike action by doctors and staff in state hospitals on Thursday, as well as a “Health Caravan” that will call at all Athens hospitals before reaching the health ministry, where state healthcare staff will hold a rally.

A four-hour strike from 7:00 to 11:00 has been declared by the Hospital Doctors’ Federation, while the national State Hospital Staff Federation has called a four-hour strike for hospital, health centre, welfare and ambulance service staff between 7:00-11:00 in Attica and a 24-hour strike in other areas.

The unions are striking in protest against staff shortages, noting that 40,000 positions in the state health system were currently unfilled and hospitals were chronically under funded. They expressed doubts about new hirings announced by the government on Tuesday, using money raised in the television licences tender, will actually take place.
