Supreme Court opens probe into reports on phone calls between prisoners and ND official

Supreme Court prosecutor Xeni Dimitriou ordered a preliminary investigation into news reports claiming that imprisoned criminals had phone conversations with several people, including New Democracy secretary Lefteris Avgenakis.

Dimitriou send the relevant press clippings to the head of the Misdemeanors’ Prosecution Office, Ilias Zagoreos, asking him to investigate whether the telephone calls in question reveal any criminal activity.

In comments made after the publication of the telephone calls, Avgenakis said: “I was asked to help on an issue that had to do with the extension of a private lease, and that’s as far as it goes.”
