Supreme Court prosecutor orders investigation into Amir’s case

A Supreme Court prosecutor has ordered a preliminary investigation into the case of 11-year-old Amir, an Afghan student whose family was the target of an attack after he was selected by lot to bear the Greek flag during the annual school parade on October 28 in Athens.

Xeni Dimitriou ordered the head of the Athens Court of First Instance Ilias Zagoreos to proceed with an investigation.

The apartment where Amir’s family lived, under a program sponsored by the City of Athens and the UN High Commission for Refugees, was attacked early last Friday by unidentified individuals who broke windows and left a sign telling the family to leave Greece.

The incident sparked outrage in Greece and led to an audience of the family with Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, who presented the young student with a Greek flag and condemned racism.
