SW Crete fire rekindles on Thursday, aided by shifting winds and inaccessible terrain

A large fire that broke out on Wednesday and was brought under control rekindled on Thursday morning and is burning low brush in Kantanos-Selinos area, SW Crete, as of Thursday evening.

The Fire Brigade added more firefighters to the area, with a total of 117 individuals and 54 firetrucks. There is a mountain unit as well, while assistance is also provided by volunteer firefighters and local water trucks.

Two helicopters and 2 airplanes dropped water until sunset.

Firefighers have to deal with an inaccessible area and high winds in the area, according to the mayor, with wind direction changing constantly. The fire is burning in several pockets, he said.
