Syrian man hospitalized after altercation at Moria migrant and refugee center on Lesvos

A 28-year-old Syrian national is in hospital and out of danger following extensive surgery, after he was knifed in the stomach on Monday night on the island of Lesvos.

The man was injured during an altercation among ethnic groups of migrants and refugees housed at the reception and identification center in Moria.

A 19-year-old Iraqi national was arrested and is charged with attempted murder.

According to a statement by the Interior ministry on Tuesday, the Moria center houses 6,430 people in facilities made to accomodate 2,330 individuals. Overall, in the greater area of Mytilini, where the local population numbers 32,000, there are 8,221 refugees and migrants awaiting processing.
