SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance reacted on Monday evening to Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s speech to Turkish Cypriots earlier in the day.
The Turkish President’s statements are unacceptable, said the Greek main opposition party, as they run against International Law and related United Nations decisions.
“The entire international community, and especially the EU, must act so that a fair and viable solution to the Cyprus problem can move ahead, on the basis of a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality, under one sovereignty, a single citizenship, one international personality – without guarantees and without occupation troops,” it was stressed in the party statement.
In its statement, SYRIZA also calls on the Greek government to coordinate its actions with Cyprus, to take appropriate political and diplomatic initiatives immediately, and to design a medium-term solution strategy that utilizes Euro-Turkish relations and the role of the permanent members of the UN’s Security Council in the area.
Erdogan on Monday promised Turkish Cypriots that a new building will be constructed to symbolize the state of northern Cyprus, which he said the world would “sooner or later” come to recognize.
