SYRIZA leader tables questions to PM Mitsotakis on police violence

The government must withdraw riot police from its supervisory role on social distancing, SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance leader Alexis Tsipras said on Monday, in questions to Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis tabled in Parliament.

Following social media footage at the southern suburb of Nea Smyrni’s main square, Tsipras said that “the recent phenomena of violence and abuse by police in Nea Smyrni went too far.”

The two questions he tabled related to how long the PM woujld “allow this crescendo of police violence and abuse with the excuse of observing health measures you and your government constantly violate”, and called for the withdrawal of the Dias unit from the supervision of public social distancing.

The main opposition leader also asked for explanations on why the premier “abolished the committee investigating police violence that was set up in December 2019 by the Citizen Protection minister.”
