Katrougalos on Prespes Agreement: We welcome FM Dendias’ statements

SYRIZA MP responsible for foreign affairs George Katrougalos welcomed comments by Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias related to the Prespes Agreement but charged the government with somersaulting on the issue, in statements made on Wednesday.

“We welcome today’s statements by Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias at Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee relating to the importance of the full and consistent fulfilment of Prespes Agreement terms,” Katrougalos said, “in contrast to the doublespeak of many other government officials.”

Syriza, he said, also “welcomes statements of New Democracy MP and former foreign minister Dora Bakoyannis, by which she calls on Mr. Dendias to take initiatives supporting the agreement, admits that populism contains serious national dangers, and condemns those who clamor for the agreement’s annulment.”

The former foreign minister also charged Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis with “investing in national populism and hypocrisy by opposing the Prespes Agreement.” Mitsotakis, he said, ought to explain his government’s positions. “Despite having lost count on ND’s somersaults on this issue, it is undoubtedly significant to recognize reality,” he said.

Meanwhile, in statements at a press conference in Skopje on Wednesday, North Macedonia’s Prime Minister Zoran Zaev confirmed that his government will fulfil its obligations under the agreement’s terms and expects the same of the Greek side. At the event, he denied that his government had received an invitation to join the Eurasian Economic Union, stating that it has chosen to join the EU.
