“The temporary reintroduction of border controls in the Schengen area must stop,” European Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship Dimitris Avramopoulos said on Thursday, upon his arrival at the EU Home Affairs and Justice Ministers Council in Brussels.
Avramopoulos said that the time has come for a return to the normal functioning of the Schengen zone and added that all sides are working together to restore its full functioning.
The strengthening of the Schengen zone and the reform of the Common European Asylum System will be the focus of the current council. Avramopoulos said that member states should be able to complete the negotiations on the reform of the asylum system by the end of June and to move from a crisis situation to a stable, operational migration management system.
“We need to be better prepared in the future. We are not where we were three years ago. We have made significant progress, but much more must be done and cooperation between member states is of great importance,” the Commissioner said.
