The eight Turkish servicemen could be tried in Greece, Justice Minister Kontonis says

The eight Turkish military personnel that fled to Greece after the failed coup attempt in Turkey could be tried in Greek courts, Justice Minister Stavros Kontonis said on Thursday during a press conference

Kontonis explained that the government is examining this possibility in case it is requested by Turkey. He reiterated Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras’ statement that they must have a fair trial. As a result, he added, the possibility of a trial in Greece for offences committed abroad is being examined, in accordance with article 8 of the Penal Code.

“The issue of their extradition has closed once and for all. The decision of the Supreme Court is absolutely respected by all of us. I cannot understand why some legal circles keep referring to the issue. The case is now before Justice. A lot of fuss over nothing,” Kontonis concluded.
