The EU supports the ‘historic’ Prespes Agreement, EU Commission spokesperson says

The European Union “supports the historic Agreement signed by Prime Ministers Tsipras and Zaev in June last year,” spokesperson for the European Commission Maja Kocijancic said on Monday during the regular press briefing.

Asked to comment on the completion of the process for ratification of the Prespes Agreement in Skopje and political developments in Greece, European Commission spokesman Margaritis Schinas noted that the Commission never comments on internal political developments in member-states but noted that “we are following them closely”.

Kocijancic, spokesperson on foreign affairs and security policy, said Commission has repeatedly said that the signing of the agreement “took political courage, leadership, responsibility to resolve one of the oldest conflicts in this region. We see it as the unique opportunity to overcome difficulties of the past, to enhance reconciliation for the region and for Europe as a whole and we are now following the national procedures that are still needed for implementation of this agreement.”
