The Greek farming sector can create the Greek brand name, says Professor Kouretas

Professor at the department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology of Thessaly University Dimitris Kouretas estimated that Greece can achieve the production of unique nutrition profile for its products, what is called “Greek brand name”, speaking to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency radio’s station “Praktoreio 104.9 FM” on Monday.

Referring to the country’s position in the international food market, as it is being formed, the head of the reasearch group of Animal Physiology – Toxicology said that taking into consideration Greece’s biodiversity, its products can be used as raw material in the production of innovative product, attractive to the consumer that may be exported as unique Greek products after a basic proccessing.

In both cases, according to Kouretas, we can achieve the production of a unique final nutrition product what we call “Greek brand name” something that in order to be completed it needs a “major mobilisation between several ‘players’. This strategy demand the appropriate drawing and research for each product and the participation and cooperation of all involved rings of the chain of primary sector as distribution and processing as well as in the promotion in retail sector,” explained Kouretas.

The professor said that the Greek researchers have ‘created’ in the last ten years over 30 farming products that are available in the market due to a special procedure. “We take farming products and food which did not have special value until the moment we got interested in them and through the research we are conducting on them we create the conditions to acquire high additional value” said Kouretas.

He referred to the case of the Greek cheese milk, which as seasonal product and has high protein value. The research group managed to isolate the proteins and created dry products “a whole chain of such products which have high biological value”.
