Thessaloniki police detain 61 foreigners over lack of proper documentation, after sweep

Police sweeps around the New Railroad Station in Thessaloniki early on Tuesday morning resulted in the roundup of 160 foreign nationals and the arrest of 61 of these over lack of proper documentation.

The detained individuals include nationals from Algeria, Iran, Iraq and Pakistan, among others. They will be led to the appropriate police departments dealing with foreigners for expulsion procedures.

According to a Hellenic Police statement, the operation was undertaken after protests by local residents about their safety. In previous days, witnesses had reported violent altercations among the foreign nationals in the area. Seven people were also brought to police departments for questioning, with two of these being detained.
