Tongo-flagged freighter under suspicion of carrying contraband cigarettes

Syros port authorities were conducting a thorough inspection of the Tongo-flagged freighter “Daslis” with the support of customs on Thursday, to discover possible contraband cigarettes concealed on board the vessel.

The ship, which had switched off its automatic recognition system, had sailed from Libya with a six-member crew, all Egyptians, and was bound for Odessa.

The freighter was led to Neorio shipyard on Syros and the authorities are searching the contents of the containers on board.

The specific ship is known to police as it was involved in a case of contraband cigarattes in 2015 on Crete.
