Tourism Minister Elena Kountoura warned on Tuesday that the ongoing labour action by the municipal garbage collectors’ union could hurt the country’s image if it continues and urged protesters to rethink their position.
“The huge volumes of garbage combined with high temperatures create health hazards for Greeks and foreign visitors in our country. The Tourism ministry has received a wave of complaints from tour operators and professionals in the tourism industry in Greece and abroad. They call for immediate and drastic actions to ensure the seamless continuation of the tourist season and prevent damage to the country’s image internationally,” the minister said in a statement.
Kountoura urged POE-OTA union to rethink its decision and end the protests.
The comment follows failed talks between the union and Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras earlier today when it rejected a compromising proposal to end the strike.
