The towns of Soufli, Didymoticho and Orestiada in northeastern Greece struggled to clear the snow that accumulated over the last three days as freezing temperatures also made travel difficult.
In Soufli, snowfall continued all night long, but villages were not cut off for long as the snow-clearing machines operated constantly. Mayor Vangelis Poulilios said that snow stopped falling at 8:00 a.m. but temperatures remained below freezing, from -2C to -4C (24.8F-28.4F). Schools will remain closed, he said.
Orestiada Mayor Vassilis Mavridis said that roads were cleared and the narrow passages between houses heavily salted, while he added that temperatures are expected to drop on Thursday to -11C (12.2F).
In Didymoticho, mayor Paraskevas Patsouridis said snow-clearing machines were out at 5:00 am. and some communities had been briefly snowed in because it was snowing all night long.
