U.S. Ambassador in Athens Geoffrey Pyatt on Wednesday visited the statue of US President Harry Truman in Athens, following an unsuccessful attempt by Communist Party of Greece (KKE)-affiliated anti-war protestors to topple the statue on Monday.
Pyatt, who had just returned from a visit to the Orthodox monastic community of Mount Athos in northern Greece, was photographed standing next to the monument and the damage inflicted by protestors that tried to cut through it using a rotary saw. He then posted the following tweet:
“As soon as I returned from from Mt.Athos, I stopped by to check on the Harry Truman statue – a symbol of the US-Greece alliance and a reminder of the American people’s generosity during Greece’s darkest days.”
