Tsakalotos: Eurogroup will support Greece after it emerges from adjustment program

The Eurogroup pledged last June to help Greece return to the markets with more funds after it completes its adjustment program, so that the country’s economy can stand on its feet, Finance Minister Euclid Tsakalotos said in parliament on Monday, during a debate on the 2018 state budget.

The debate will compete on Tuesday night with speeches from Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and the leaders of the opposition.

“Last June, the Eurogroup pledged, following Greece’s exit from the memorandum in August 2018, to help Greece return to the markets with more money, not only to end with its arrears but also to build up [financial] reserves to enable the Greek economy to stand on its feet,” he said, responding to PASOK MP Evangelos Venizelos who claimed earlier that there would be no clear exit from the bailout program.

“You are wrong to claim that what we’ll build [the financial cushion] will be the result of the high surplus,” he added.
