Main opposition SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance leader Alexis Tsipras on Thursday spoke on the phone with Archbishop of Athens and All Greece Ieronymos.
Tsipras expressed his concern over the course of the pandemic and briefed Ieronymos on his party’s legislative initiative to make it mandatory for the unvaccinated to show a negative test before attending church.
In this context, he said that at a crucial time when the pandemic was out of control and dozens were
dying in the country each day, the Holy Synod’s initiative, with which it urged the faithful to get tested before entering a church, was self-evidently moving in the right direction for the protection of human life.
“In other words, the Church is recommending what the government does not dare to impose,” commented Tsipras.
However, he added, the state should assume its responsibilities and not pass them on to the Church.
Finally, Tsipras stressed that the Church should further intensify its efforts to persuade more people that they need to get vaccinated immediately.
