Tsipras, Cretu discuss EU fund absorption, assistance to earthquake victims

The absorption of EU funds and the European Commission’s assistance to the earthquake-stricken areas of Greece were discussed in a meeting between Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and EU regional policy commissioner Corina Cretu in Athens on Tuesday.

Cretu congratulated the Greek government for absorbing European funds being the EU country that has shown the highest percentage of absorption since 2015, exceeding 11 billion euros. She also noted the Commission’s intention to find the necessary funds to help the areas affected by Monday’s earthquake.

They also discussed cohesion policy and agreed in the need to continue it, in the face of conservative forces that seek to have less Europe.
