Tsipras in Yannena: Gov’t should hire more people in health sector

The coronavirus pandemic must be managed by hiring more staff for the National Health System (ESY), SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance leader Alexis Tsipras said on Tuesday from Ioannina, criticizing the prime minister for delays.

“Now that there is no troika over our heads telling us how many to hire and how many to lay off, we must bolster ESY,” Tsipras said after meeting with management and staff of the University Hospital of Ioannina. He charged the prime minister with delays in hiring “because he has in mind public-private partnerships in health,” and he expressed the hope that the premier has come to appreciate the public health system more.

Tsipras also called on the prime minister to bring to Parliament the contract with Cisco on the e-learning platforms for high schools, which “failed a second day in a row.” Acknowledging Cisco’s revelation that it had been having problems with its server in London, the party leader said nevertheless that “no other country in Europe has turned over its educational process to a single provider alone, as most countries took advantage of public platforms.” The government, he said, should have used the existing national school platform as well.
