Tsipras with Ambassador Reichel: German EU Council Presidency must take further initiatives to end Turkish aggression

SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras stressed the importance of the immediate undertaking of further initiatives by Germany’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2020 to end Turkish aggression and to restart continental shelf and Exclusive Economic Zone talks, at his meeting with German Ambassador to Greece Ernst Reichel on Thursday.
If these talks were to fail, Tsipras added, an appeal to The Hague-based International Court of Justice would be the next step.
He also stressed that the EU must assume its responsibilities by intensifying Euro-Turkish dialogue and adopting clear sanctions immediately if violations of the sovereign rights of Greece and Cyprus continue.
The main opposition party leader noted that the Dublin Regulation needs revising, and that this revision is preferable to Greece bearing the brunt of managing migration flows.
Regarding the EU’s Recovery Fund, Tsipras stressed that what is important for the European South and specifically for Greece are not mere announcements of financial instruments, but practical support of the work force and the immediate strengthening of the national economy’s specific pandemic-afflicted sectors.
Also key, he added, is ensuring maximum absorption of EU aid to avoid what he called the catastrophic social effect of the new economic crisis brought by the coronavirus pandemic.
