Turkey issues NAVTEX for area around Kastellorizo next Wednesday

Turkey has issued a navigational telex (NAVTEX) reserving an area that surrounds the territorial waters of the Greek island of Kastellorizo in the southeast Aegean for a search-and-rescue exercise on Wednesday, October 31. The NAVTEX issued was on Saturday and reserves the area for four hours, from 11:00 until 15:00 on Wednesday afternoon, while noting that the exercise will be held outside the territorial waters of foreign countries.

Commenting on this “new unacceptable Turkish NAVTEX”, main opposition New Democracy shadow foreign minister George Koumoutsakos accused Ankara of “testing stability and peace in this sensitive region” and stoking tension in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean.

“This irresponsible behaviour should be opposed not only by Greece and the affected countries but the international community as a whole,” he added.
