Unemployment rate falls to 20.6 pct in August

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in August 2017 was 20.6 pct compared to the upward revised 23.4 pct in August 2016 and the downward revised 20.9 pct in July 2017.

The number of employed in August 2017 amounted to 3,792,358 persons. The number of unemployed amounted to 984,483 while the number of inactive to 3,231,039.

The number of employed persons increased by 101,578 persons compared with August 2016 (a 2.8 pct rate of increase) and by 6,549 persons compared with July 2017 (a 0.2 pct rate of increase).

The number of unemployed persons decreased by 141,342 persons compared with August 2016 (a 12.6% rate of decrease) and by 16,769 persons compared with July 2017 (a 1.7 pct rate of decrease).

The number of inactive persons, i.e., persons that neither work nor look for a job, increased by 5,215 persons compared with August 2016 (a 0.2 pct rate of decrease) and by 7,472 persons compared with July 2017 (a 0.2 pct rate of increase).
