Varvitsiotis in Brussels: Western Balkan countries belong in the EU family

The western Balkan countries belong in the European Union, Alternate Foreign Affairs Minister Miltiadis Varvitsiotis said following Tuesday’s meeting of the EU’s General Affairs Council.

In a brief statement afterwards, Varvitsiotis said this was the message of the Council’s members.
Commenting on October’s decision by the EU to postpone the start of accession talks for Albania and North Macedonia, Varvitsiotis said, “Despite delays caused by the decision not to start EU accession negotiations (…) we are conveying to the western Balkans countries that we do want them in our European family and to the European Commision that there is a way forward towards this enlargement.”
